DERSU UZALA is based upon the writings of Vladimir Arsenyev, the Soviet traveller and explorer. Set in the early years of the 20th century in the forests of Eastern Siberia, the film chronicles the relationship of two men: Dersu, a hunter, in perfect harmony with nature, and Arseniev, a scientist, a writer, and a Captain in the Tsar's army.

DERSU UZALA won the Oscar for best foreign film in 1975.
