THE FILMS OF ESTELA BRAVO

Estela Bravo is a documentary filmmaker who has directed many films about Latin America. Her style is unique and brings out the innermost feelings of the people she interviews. The military dictatorships, the struggle for economic and political freedom, problems of cultural identity, repression, and the tragedy of children who have disappeared are present in her documentaries made for film and television. She has been awarded prizes at festivals in Bilbao, Havana, Leipzig, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago.

THOSE WHO LEFT (1979, Colour)
This documentary is about Cubans who left their country at the beginning of the Revolution, and who are now living in the United States. It reveals the inside story of the exodus of unaccompanied Cuban children. Those Who Left has won numerous awards.


CUBANS IN PERU: TWO YEARS LATE (1982, Colour)
This film presents the experiences and views of Cubans who took part in the occupation of the Peruvian Embassy in Havana in 1980.


LOS MARIELITOS (1983, Colour)
This film is about those Cubans who left the island in 1980 from the port of Mariel. After two years of living in the United States, they compare their former lives with their new ones.


MISSING CHILDREN (1985, Colour)
This film tells the story of two children who disappeared during the 1970s under Argentina's military dictatorship, and were later reunited with their families.


RETURNING TO CHILE (1986, Colour)
Returning to Chile deals with the children of those Chileans who fled the military dictatorship in the 70s and later returned, their political commitment as strong as ever.


CHILDREN IN DEBT (1985, Colour)
This film looks at the suffering of children in Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Columbia, all living under the burden of the foreign debt.


THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CUBA IN ARGENTINA (1984, Colour)
This film concerns the return to Buenos Aires after a twenty-year absence of the brilliant ballerina Alicia Alonso.


HOLY FATHER AND GLORIA (1987, Colour)
In this film a young woman recounts her experiences under the military dictatorship in Chile.


AFTER THE BATTLE (1990, Colour)
This film chronicles the history of Angola's struggle for independence, and Cuba's pivotal contribution to its ultimate success.
